News: Social Club cards launched

As we speculated back in December, it seems the mobile version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is indeed making the jump to Windows 8(.1) and RT devices. Nyolc8 over at GTAForums was able to capture the following screenshot of the store entry before Rockstar pulled it.

In case you're wondering, 1,500,000.00 Ft equals about $6.99 USD -- the same price as on other devices. Of course, no official word from Rockstar yet that its even coming to Windows 8 -- so be sure to act surprised when it finally appears.

A few weeks late to the party, Rockstar has finally released a trailer for the mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that were released in December.

The game is out now for Android, Kindle and iOS devices. Click here for a list of supported Android devices and click here for a list of support iOS devices. Those of you with Windows Phones, you'll have to wait for an undisclosed time period.

A bit of a warning if you have an Android device, the latest patch 1.03 which was released on December 20th breaks the game for many -- resulting in a black screen shortly after signing into Social Club. The only way to fix this is to downgrade the game to version 1.02, which is impossible without backups or finding the game via a different source. As of yet, Rockstar hasn't acknowledged this issue. Hopefully this doesn't end up unpatched like Vice City on Android's problem of screen freezing during cut scenes and in vehicles.

To celebrate the launch, Rockstar is giving away a number of San Andreas related prizes via its Facebook page. You can sign-up starting today through Monday January 13th at this promotion page. Miss out? A number of these items are expect to appear for purchase over at the Rockstar Warehouse soon.

Making possibly the lowest key release in Rockstar's history, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is out now for iOS. Rockstar has finally acknowledged the release on it's website, after being available for a day in select countries. Check out our previous article on the release in New Zealand for specifics on the iOS version. Android, Kindle and Windows Phone, as we expected, are taking a backseat to the Steve Jobs Master Race and have been given a "coming soon" release date. Here's four screenshots Rockstar have released of the iOS version.

The ESRB has given the mobile version a Mature rating, which is not suprising. What is surprising is that "Windows PC" is listed among the platforms for the mobile version rating. Could this mean that the mobile version is coming to Windows RT and Windows 8 Modern UI? Otherwise, there's no sense in Rockstar paying for it to be certified again on PC.

If you were wondering why the radio in the mobile version seems like it's missing something -- it's actually missing quite a few tracks. Ash_735, a modder involved with the awesome VCSPC mod, has found that a number of tracks have been removed.

"Critical Beatdown"

"Running Down A Dream"
"Woman To Woman"

Bounce FM
"You Dropped A Bomb On Me"
"Yum Yum"
"Running Away"

Radio Los Santos
"I Don't Give A f*ck"
"Express Yourself"

Radio X
"Killing in the Name of"

K-Jah West
"Ring My Bell"
"Don't Let It Go To Your Head"

MasterSounds 98.3
"Express Yourself"
"Rock Creek Park"
"Soul Power '74"
"The Payback"

Ash_735 has also noted that the mobile version has extremely low quality audio files, noting that some audio even suffers from conversion stutter. Theory is that the community audio tool SAAT was used to extract the audio from the PC version, then re-converted into another format. It's noted that it may be possible for the community to properly convert the audio, along with restoring the missing songs, and release them as a mod.

A topic has already popped up over at GTAForums where modding veterans are discussing how to mod the game. Mod tool author nick7 has already updated his "TXDFucker" tool to open the updated texture files and hopes to release it soon.

EDIT: San Andreas is now out on Android and Kindle devices.

Without so much as a peep from Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for iOS has mysteriously popped up on the iTunes store in New Zealand. It is in fact the actual game and is currently selling for $9.99 NZD, which is roughly $6.99 USD. Oddly enough, the game only weighs in at 1.63GB -- a drastic size drop compared to the Xbox, PS2 and PC versions of the game. It is available in 8 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish. The mobile features according to the store page are as follows:

  • Remastered, high-resolution graphics built specifically for mobile including lighting enhancements, an enriched color palette and improved character models.
  • Enhanced for the iPhone 5 series and iPad 4th Gen and above with dynamic detailed shadows and real-time environmental reflections.
  • Physical controller support for all Made-for-iOS controllers.
  • Cloud save support for playing across all your iOS devices for Rockstar Social Club Members.
  • Dual analog stick controls for full camera and movement control.
  • Three different control schemes and customizable controls with contextual options to display buttons only when you need them.

Supported devices are:

  • iPhone 4s
  • iPhone 5 Family
  • iPod Touch 5th gen
  • iPad 2, 3rd and 4th gen
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Mini and Mini with Retina

No word yet when SA will jump borders to other countries nor any word if Android and Windows Phone will get shafted.

EDIT: San Andreas now appears to be on both the US and UK iTunes stores. The price is currently $6.99 in the US and £4.99 in the UK. As of 12:21 AM EST, the game doesn't appear to be on Google Play nor the WP Store. Rockstar continues to be completely silent.

Was there really ever any doubt? Rockstar has announced that just like Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City, San Andreas will also be making the jump to mobile devices. This time around, however, SA mobile will be making an appearance on Windows Phone as well as iOS and Android. While not officially stated, it wouldn't be too hard to see it make it over to Windows RT and Windows 8 Metro later on.

The mobile version is said to include the usual mobile upgrades: dynamic and detailed shadows, greater draw distance, an enriched color palette, plus enhanced character and car models. In addition, the mobile version is also bringing a reworked checkpoint system, new contextual controls and three different control schemes for both driving and walking.

While Rockstar claims December is the target date, no specific release date was mentioned nor if SA will also have a staged iOS then Android then other devices release as is typical Rockstar fashion.
