Rockstar has released 15 new screenshots of Grand Theft Auto V for PC in glorious 3840x2160 resolution (albeit in heavily compressed JPEG form).

Rockstar is also introducing a new pre-order deal. If you pre-order by March 31st, you will get a bonus of $300,000 to use in Grand Theft Auto Online. They are also planning to announce more info "in the weeks ahead" (which in Rockstar time can mean months), including a new trailer for the PC version.

Sigh, here we go again. Rockstar has announced (sadly, almost unsurprisingly at this point) that Grand Theft Auto Forever....err...Grand Theft Auto V for PC has been delayed for a third time. Originally announced as coming last fall, the PC version slipped to the date of January 27th. Then in a surprising twist just a few weeks before the planned date, Rockstar revealed that they were delaying until March 25. In an apparent attempt at setting a record for most delays of a port, Rockstar has again announced today that they are now targeting April 14. The reason cited was to ensure "as much polish as possible" which is great but let's delve a bit deeper into why so much time has been needed.

A work area inside Rockstar North

The PC version has been in production since at least 2012 according to Rockstar's own bug tracking logs found in the PS3 version back in 2013. Yes, that's right - it has now taken 4 years for a port to be finished. With a company as big as Rockstar, why has it taken this long? Rockstar seems to have made a huge mistake in predicting how much development bandwidth they actually had. We assume that the early development of the PC version was in-fact actually in preparation for the new generation of consoles as they use similar architecture to the PC. Back before release of the Xbone, Microsoft was still way behind and didn't deliver final development kits until just a few months before release of the console. Then it wasn't until the next year after release that they gave developers a finalized graphics driver. Knowing this and Rockstar's love for console platforms, we assume that at some point top priority shifted away from perfecting PC to making it work correctly on Xbox One and perfecting PlayStation 4. Rockstar also wanted to add first person view among other new features which needed to be developed and implemented - along with the heists which they said would launch shortly after Online but ended up going through several different redesigns. Oh and did I mention Online content packs, fixing Online issues and the single player DLC that is supposedly still being developed?

So with all that in mind, it's no wonder why Rockstar keeps kicking the can down the road. And while it's great they are not releasing the PC version until it's good and ready, it would be nice to have Rockstar open up more lines of communication with not only the community - but more internal communication between developers, management and marketing as well so they don't make unrealistic promises.

Oh, and heists are supposedly coming March 10th.

Ever since our first look at Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar has been teasing the ability to perform heists with friends. Seemingly each time it's even mentioned the can is kicked further down the road with little information to show. Today, we finally have some tangible evidence Duke Nukem Forever online heists does in-fact exist in the form of a minute long trailer and a preview from IGN. The trailer can be view above and as always we've summed up the important bits from the preview below:

  • "Early 2015" release date
  • Rebuilt from ground up several times
  • Four players at rank 12 or above
  • Spent time making sure it's interesting for all positions in the team
  • One player will act as leader
  • Planning a heist requires owning a high-end apartment
  • Leader will be responsible for funding any prep work
  • Crew members (except leader) get a payout for each prep mission
  • Five heists strands with 20 total missions
  • Bonus reward for playing all five in order with same set of players
  • Bonus reward for playing all five in first-person mode
  • "Elite Challenges" for meeting certain criteria such as accuracy

Rockstar had previously stated that heists would be the next update after the NewGen versions launched, but that doesn't look to be the case with the holiday's update fast approaching. However, seeing as Rockstar finally seems to be happy with the state heists is in, we'd expect the early 2015 release date to really be early 2015 - perhaps even near or soon after the PC version?

Last month Rockstar released on update on Steam for Grand Theft Auto San Andreas that added XInput controller support while removing several songs and breaking saved games for German players. It also continued the trend excluding version 1.01 fixes such as 1080p support. A week later we reported that another update for the game was being staged. Four weeks later, the update has finally gone live. In line with the last update, there is no official version number so to avoid confusion the community is calling it "NewSteam r2". Unlike the last update, however, Rockstar has released an official changelog for this update:

  • Added 1080p Resolution

Sadly, there's no sign of Rockstar restoring songs previous owners should rightfully have access to. Just like with the last update, an unofficial community downgrader has been created to rectify this issue. This new downgrader will take your legally purchased NewSteam r2 (12/9) to before the 11/7 patch. It relies on binary differences so no game files are being distributed. As such, this will only work correctly with the 12/9/14 update. Once downgraded, we recommend making a copy of your San Andreas folder and storing it somewhere outside of your Steam folder. You should also then be able to use this downgrader to version 1.0 to gain maximum modding compatibility. There is also a downgrader to take you directly from NewSteam r2 to 1.0 that should be released later today. We'll update this article when that happens.

NewSteam r2 -> pre-11/7 Downgrader: Mirror 1 | Mirror 2 | Mirror 3

EDIT: A downgrader for NewSteam r2 to the original 1.0 version of San Andreas has been released.
